Out of the thousands of entries submitted to the organization this year, seventy-eight scripts successfully advanced to the official finalist round of competition. From that competitive group, the festival selected twenty-one writers and writing teams as official winners across multiple script and film categories.
The competitions have focused on recognizing great scriptwriting for more than thirty years.
Winning projects featured in this year's announcement included notable works titled Paper Plane, Helicopter, and Old Bogus Massacre. Those honored received their awards during a special Awards Luncheon held on Saturday in Austin, Texas, celebrating independent cinematic achievement.
Barbara Morgan, Executive Director of the festival, said that the competitions have focused on recognizing great scriptwriting for more than thirty years. She said that organizers want talented storytellers to leave Austin with new relationships, meaningful industry access, and practical opportunities that can help move their careers forward.
Morgan said that this year's winners represent exactly the kind of bold and original voices that the organization is proud to champion. These annual competitions are designed to help emerging talent get discovered by agents, managers, producers, executives, and other industry leaders who are actively seeking new perspectives.
