Record Early Voting Turnout Marks Start of Austin Council and Proposition Elections

Early voting is underway in Austin and Travis County with record first-day midterm turnout as residents weigh City Council races and local ballot propositions.

Early voting is underway for the November 2026 local elections in Austin, with initial participation setting a new benchmark in Travis County. KUT reported that Travis County broke its first-day early voting turnout record for every midterm election this century. As Austinites cast their ballots, several local outlets have published guides to help residents navigate the choices. KUT examined the biggest Austin races in the November election alongside other common voter questions, while Axios released an Austin 2026 voter guide for local elections.

Contests for the Austin City Council are a primary focus on the ballot. According to Axios, the Austin City Council race has drawn the YIMBY movement into focus. Campaign finances are also under scrutiny as residents head to the polls, with KXAN Austin reporting on how much money Austin City Council candidates have going into early voting. In Austin District 5, spending on mailers has drawn additional attention. Hoodline reported that a $21,700 taxpayer mailer from Ryan Alter hit Austin District 5, and The Austin Bulldog also reported that Alter's mailer was paid for with taxpayer funds.

Alongside candidate races, voters are deciding on several City of Austin propositions on the November ballot. CultureMap Austin, Austin Current, and The Daily Texan have each published overviews explaining what Austin voters should know about Prop I and the other local propositions Austinites are voting on now. Proposition I, which addresses a city audit requirement, has generated significant debate. KEYE reported that Austin voters are split on the Proposition I city audit requirement as early voting begins, and Austin Free Press reported that groups are clashing over the ballot measure to audit the City of Austin. Separate from the ballot measures, city fiscal practices drew notice from Texas Scorecard, which reported that Austin officials have approved more than $500 Million in debt without voter consent.
